Welcome back to Tip Tuesday! With National Vinyl Record Day on August 12th, we thought it was the perfect time to return to a format many of us never really left behind. We’ve talked about caring for records, storing them, and getting the most from a turntable in previous editions, but this time, we’re looking at something less technical: why vinyl is still such a satisfying way to listen to music.

In an age of instant access and endless streaming libraries, putting on a record can feel almost deliberately slow. And maybe that’s exactly the point.

The Anti-Algorithm

Streaming has made it easier than ever to discover music, but it can also make listening feel passive. You press play, let an algorithm choose the next song, and before you know it, an hour has passed.

Vinyl encourages something different. You choose a record, pull it from the shelf, put it on, and listen. There’s no endless queue of recommendations competing for your attention. You’re more likely to hear an album from beginning to end—the way the artist intended it to be experienced. Sometimes, that little bit of commitment makes the music feel more meaningful.

More Than Just Music

Part of vinyl's appeal is everything that happens around the music. Pulling an album from its sleeve, looking through the artwork, reading the liner notes, and placing the record on the turntable all become part of the experience.

For many listeners, albums are connected to memories: where you bought them, who introduced you to an artist, or the first time you heard a particular song. Streaming can give you the music, but vinyl gives you something to hold onto.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

The good news is that taking care of your records doesn't have to be complicated. When handling a record, always hold it by the edges or the labelled centre area and avoid touching the playing surface. Fingerprints, oils, and dust can build up over time and affect playback.

Keep records stored vertically rather than stacked flat, return them to their sleeves after listening, and give them a quick clean when needed. A little care today helps ensure your collection can still be enjoyed years from now, and maybe even passed on to the next generation.

Why We Still Spin

Vinyl isn't necessarily about being better than every other format. Streaming offers incredible convenience, digital formats can deliver excellent sound quality, and there are plenty of situations where they're the obvious choice. Vinyl simply offers a different way of listening; one that asks you to slow down, pay attention, and spend a little more time with an album.

And perhaps that's why, decades after its original heyday, we're still pulling records off the shelf and dropping the needle.
