Tip Tuesdays: Creating a "Work-From-Home" Hi-Fi Zone

Sep 15, 2026

Welcome back to Tip Tuesday! Working from home has changed the way many of us spend our days. For some, the home office has become a permanent part of the routine, which means we're also spending more time listening to music from behind a desk. So why settle for laptop or monitor speakers when a few simple changes can turn your workspace into a great little listening zone?

Start With the Right Speakers

You don't need a huge pair of floorstanding speakers to enjoy great sound at your desk. Compact powered speakers or a small desktop Hi-Fi setup can deliver plenty of detail while taking up minimal space.

Because you'll be sitting relatively close to the speakers, you can enjoy a focused listening experience without needing to fill the entire room with sound. It's a great way to get better audio without turning your office into a full-blown listening room.

Placement Makes a Difference

Where you put your speakers matters just as much on a desk as it does in a larger room. Try positioning them roughly the same distance from you and from each other, creating a small listening triangle. Angling them slightly toward your listening position can also help create a more focused stereo image.

If possible, keep the tweeters around ear level. Small speaker stands, risers, or isolation pads can help with this while also keeping vibrations from transferring directly into your desk.

Keep Your Setup Simple

Your computer can be the perfect source for a desktop audio system. Depending on your equipment, you can connect using USB, optical, Bluetooth, or an analog connection.

The best option is ultimately the one that fits your setup and routine. If you're constantly switching cables or navigating complicated settings just to play music, you've probably made things more complicated than they need to be.

Think About Your Listening

Working music doesn't always need to demand your attention. Instrumental music, jazz, classical, ambient recordings, or familiar albums can provide a great soundtrack without becoming a distraction.

And don't forget the volume. Since you're sitting close to your speakers, you don't need to play music particularly loud to enjoy it. A comfortable listening level can make music a much better companion throughout the workday.

Make Your Desk a Listening Space

One of the best things about desktop audio is how little you need to get started. A good pair of compact speakers, thoughtful placement, and a simple connection to your computer can make a surprisingly big difference.

Your home office may be where you answer emails and sit through meetings, but it can also become one of your favourite places to listen. What could be better than making the workday sound a little better?

Thanks for spending a few minutes with this week's Tip Tuesday. Until next time, happy listening!
